Capital Project List Updates
Ocean City in recent years has committed an unprecedented level of funding to completing long-neglected projects. The city plans to spend more than $159 million over the next five years to improve every part of island from the beach and boardwalk to the bay. Check here for regular updates on projects. The work is guided by a five-year capital plan.


Here are projects currently under construction, in the planning stages and recently completed.


 

UNDER CONSTRUCTION


FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT: MERION PARK

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  Construction to begin on Monday, March 11, 2024. 
  • DESCRIPTION: A second phase of flood mitigation work for Merion Park will also include the nearby areas of Bay Avenue, Simpson Avenue, Haven Avenue and West Avenue (34th-37th), along with sections of 35th, 36th and 37th streets. Road elevations near the West Avenue intersections with 43rd, 44th and 45th streets are also planned. This project will be completed in conjunction with Cape May County work to elevate and improve drainage along Roosevelt Boulevard from the 34th Street Bridge to West Avenue.   • SCHEDULE: The city's portion of the project is scheduled to be constructed in 2024. The county's portion will be completed in 2024/2025.

WEST AVENUE: NORTH STREET TO NINTH STREET

  • PROJECT UPDATE: The water company is replacing a water main in advance of this project. 
  • DESCRIPTION: Road, drainage and elevation improvements partially funded by an NJ DOT grant.  
  • SCHEDULE: Spring 2024

WEST AVENUE EMERGENCY SEWER MAIN REPAIR (9TH TO 16TH STREET)

PROJECT UPDATE: Temporary paving of the section from 9th Street to 11th Street is complete. Work is currently near the Wawa at 13th Street.Access to local businesses remains open. 

DESCRIPTION:  A sewer line failure under West Avenue between Ninth Street and 16th Street will require a major replacement project by the New Jersey American Water Company.
SCHEDULE: Fall 2023 to spring 2024


WEST AVENUE (18TH TO 26TH STREET)

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  A city contractor began concrete work and paving in fall 2023. One intersection at a time will be affected as this work continues.
  • DESCRIPTION: Paving, accessibility and drainage improvements partially funded by an NJ DOT grant.
  • SCHEDULE: Fall 2023 to Spring 2024

FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT: WEST 17TH STREET

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  The city is now working complete concrete work and final paving, then install stormwater pumps and electronics. Work is expected to be complete before Memorial Day 2024. 
  • DESCRIPTION: A major neighborhood drainage project on West 17th Street will add a pumping station, improve drainage and elevate roadways where possible. At the same time, utility companies will make upgrades to water, gas and sewerage lines and add a separate pumping station. See town hall presentations by the flood mitigation contractor and by the New Jersey American Water Company.
  • SCHEDULE: Fall 2022 to Spring 2024.

ANCILLARY ROADS: MIDTOWN-CENTRAL

  • PROJECT UPDATE: Utility companies are completing upgrades in advance of this project. 
  • DESCRIPTION: Central Avenue (28th to 34th), Wesley Avenue (18th to 24th), 18th Street (West Avenue to beach), 19th Street (Wesley Avenue to beach), 22nd Street (Wesley to Asbury), 23rd Street (West to beach), 24th Street (West to beach), 32nd Street (West to beach), 33rd Street (West to beach), West/Asbury alley (25th to 26th), West/Asbury alley (27th to 31st) and Asbury/Central alley (26th to 30th).  
  • SCHEDULE: Spring 2024 - Fall 2024

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

  • PROJECT UPDATE: Construction is underway.
  • DESCRIPTION: Two duplexes at the site of the former American Legion on the 3300 block of Bay Avenue.
  • SCHEDULE: 2023.

BAYSIDE DREDGING

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  The final stage of this project will include excavating the Snug Harbor sediment trap to a depth of -12. Work must be complete by March 31.
  • DESCRIPTION: Maintenance dredging on the bay side will take place this winter at Waterview, South Harbor, the mouths of Sunny Harbor, Venetian Bayou and Carnival Bayou, along with a couple of street ends along the open bay. A experimental "sediment trap" will be excavated outside the mouth of Snug Harbor to address rapid resedimenation.
  • SCHEDULE: Fall 2023 to Winter 2024


ON DECK

FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT: 21ST STREET TO 25TH STREET

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  City Council is expected to award a contract on design of this project in fall 2023. 
  • DESCRIPTION: Project will elevate streets, improve drainage and add pumping stations to the corridor between Bay Avenue and West Avenue.
  • SCHEDULE: Construction is expected to begin in fall 2024.


OPEN SPACE ON 1600 BLOCK OF SIMPSON/HAVEN

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  Environmental remediation of the new open space between 16th Street and the Community Center is expected to begin in early 2024.
  • DESCRIPTION: Conversion of a former car dealership lot into open space for public use.
  • SCHEDULE: Ongoing


POLICE SUBSTATION

  • PROJECT UPDATE: Project is under design.
  • DESCRIPTION: Construction of new police substation at 8th Street and Boardwalk. A separate project would rehabilitate the existing police station on the 800 block of Central Avenue.
  • SCHEDULE: 2024


FIFTH STREET TENNIS COURTS

  • PROJECT UPDATE: Project is scheduled to be completed between November 2023 and March 2024.
  • DESCRIPTION: Refinishing the tennis courts at Fifth Street, both hard-surface and turf.
  • SCHEDULE: Winter 2024


TENNESSEE AVENUE BOAT RAMP

  • PROJECT UPDATE: Project bids came in well over estimates. 
  • DESCRIPTION: The project will include new bulkheads, new docks and a new boat ramp, along with elevation and repaving of the parking lot. We will be able to place a temporary bulkhead across the ramp area to protect properties during flooding events.
  • SCHEDULE: Spring 2024


DOWNTOWN LIGHTING

  • PROJECT UPDATE: Project is yet to be scheduled. 
  • DESCRIPTION: New streetlights will be installed on the 800 and 900 blocks of Asbury Avenue. The lights will have a state-of-the-art system to control lighting levels. The posts will be able to accommodate our holiday decorations, and a separate low-height bollard system will be used for speakers, preventing noise from disturbing second-story residences.
  • SCHEDULE: Spring 2024
