Capital Project List Updates
Here are projects currently under construction and in the planning stages.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

EMERGENCY SEWER REPAIR ON WEST AVENUE

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  The repair is underway.
  • DESCRIPTION: The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority's contractor on Feb. 26 discovered a failed 20-inch force sewer main. Authority staff determined that the best course of action was to replace the 20-inch ductile iron force main with a new 20-inch PVC pipe. The replacement will run from a manhole in front of the 32nd Street Pump Station to the transition point of the force main installed as part of the Bay Ave force main replacement project in 2019–2021 at 31st Street and Haven Avenue. The total length of the new 20-inch PVC pipe will be approximately 830 feet. It is estimated that this replacement will take approximately eight weeks. West Avenue between 30th Street and 32nd Street will remain closed. Additional road closures are anticipated on 31st Street between West and Haven avenues. Access to West Avenue homes on the 3000 and 3100 blocks will remain open from the alleys by entering from 30th Street and 32nd Street.
  • SCHEDULE: March to May 2026

ADDITIONAL PARKING BEHIND CITY HALL

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  Demolition of the buildings is tentatively slated for March 2026 with paving and striping expected to be complete before Memorial Day 2026.
  • DESCRIPTION: The purchase of two private parking lots and two buildings will allow for the expansion of downtown parking along the 800 block of Central Avenue (behind City Hall).
  • SCHEDULE: Spring 2026.

BOARDWALK RECONSTRUCTION
  • PROJECT UPDATE:  Work at the north end portion of the project is expected to be complete before the end of March.
  • DESCRIPTION: A $4.9 million Boardwalk Preservation Fund grant will help pay for rebuilding the Boardwalk from St. Charles Place to Fifth Street. Project will include complete replacement of substructure and decking. A section of ipe decking will be preserved and re-installed. A separate project to rebuild from 14th Street to 16th Street will take place after summer 2026.
  • SCHEDULE: Fall 2025 to Fall 2026

ROOSEVELT BOULEVARD RECONSTRUCTION

  • PROJECT UPDATE:  During the next stage of construction starting on March 13, the access road will remain open, however, there will not be a direct connection of the access road to Roosevelt Boulevard, as construction will be occurring adjacent to the cut-through streets. Eastbound traffic will need to continue to Bay Avenue and access Merion Park from the local streets. Westbound traffic will still have access to the U-turn under the bridge to get to Merion Park. This stage will hopefully be completed within six weeks, which will then allow direct access of Roosevelt Boulevard to resume.
  • DESCRIPTION: The County of Cape May will advance a resurfacing/reconstruction contract of Roosevelt Boulevard/34th Street with the project limits beginning at the base of the easterly approach of the Roosevelt Boulevard bridge and extending east to West Avenue. In addition, the project also includes the creation of raised intersections along West Avenue at 35th, 36th, 37th, 43rd, 44th and 45th Street intersections. The purpose of the raised intersections is to provide enhanced drainage, eliminate intersection ponding and to provide more compatible ADA access. The purpose of the overall project is to provide an improved riding surface, enhance the aesthetics of the corridor, provide bicycle compatibility, calm traffic,  and  address periodic flooding issues resulting from tidal flooding.  This will be achieved by  elevating the center portion the roadway to a consistent elevation along the corridor from the bridge to Bay Avenue. See complete project description
  • SCHEDULE: The first phase, the reconstruction of the Roosevelt Boulevard/34th Street corridor, will proceed in the winter of 2025/2026  with completion slated for May 21, 2026. The remaining raised intersection work along West Avenue (Cr 619) will begin in September 2026 with a completion date of December 21, 2026.
