Ocean City seeks volunteers to fill seats on the Utility Advisory Commission, Shade Tree Committee, and Environmental Commission.

Duties of the Utility Advisory Commission are to interact and communicate with utility organizations including but not limited to those providing Ocean City with electric, gas, water, sewer and cable television, as well as municipal utility authorities, for the purposes of advising the City Council of issues of public importance concerning rate schedules, service and other related subjects. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m.

Duties of the Shade Tree Committee involve with the regulation, planting, planning and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery on any public street, park or property in Ocean City. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m.

Duties of the Environmental Commission include:

  • To protect, develop or promote use of natural resources, including water resources, located within territorial limits of the City of Ocean City.
  • Conduct research into the use and possible use of open land areas of the City and may coordinate the activities of unofficial bodies organized for similar purposes, and may advertise, prepare, print, and distribute books, maps, charts, plans and pamphlets which in its judgment it deems necessary for its purpose.
  • Keep an index of all open space areas, publicly or privately owned, including open marshland, swamps and other wetlands, in order to obtain information on the proper use of such area and may from time to time recommend to the City’s Planning Board plans and programs for inclusion in the Master Plan and the development and use of such areas.
  • Under certain circumstances, review applications before the Planning Board and Zoning Board and provide input and recommendations to those boards.
  • To apply for applicable state grants.

The board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Howard S. Stainton Senior Center within the Ocean City Community Center (1735 Simpson Avenue).

Duties & Responsibilities can be found on our web site at www.ocnj.us under Government, Boards & Commissions or at the City Clerk’s office. Applicants for the Environmental Commission must have experience in reading plans.
