The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) is replacing/rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue; and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street.

Work for Jan. 13-17:

As of the end of the day Friday (1/10/20), the contractor's south crew will have installed new PVC pipe, backfilled, and temporary paved to a point, going northward, about 200 feet south of 22nd Street. The contractor's north crew will have completed the same work, going southward, to the intersection of 18th Street and Bay Avenue.

Traffic

The project will require changes to the traffic patterns for students traveling to and from Ocean City Intermediate School. The temporary traffic pattern will be in place for approximately two to three weeks as work is completed on Bay Avenue in front of the school.

Starting on Monday, Jan. 13, the following traffic patterns will observed:

  • Bus Traffic: Buses will approach the school going southward on Haven Avenue (from 17th Street) and will drop off and pick up children at the intersection of 18th Street and Haven Avenue. The buses will exit the dropoff location going eastward on 18th Street.
  • Parents' Cars: The car drop-off will remain unchanged.
  • Crosswalks: The crosswalk locations will not change, except that the contractor will shift the location at 18th Street and Bay Avenue to ensure that the children are a safe distance from construction activities. The relocated crosswalk will be marked as such. Two crossing guards along with a police officer will be stationed at the intersection of Haven Avenue and 18th Street. A crossing guard and a police officer also will be stationed at the intersections of 20th Street and Bay Avenue and 18th Street and Bay Avenue. All other intersections shall be manned as they normally are.

Regular Bay Avenue traffic will be detoured to West Avenue between 24th Street and 14th Street during weekdays with the roadway open to local traffic and to local businesses. Bay Avenue will be open to traffic in both directions on weekends.
