August 28, 2026
Dear Friends,
I want to encourage everyone to attend the mayor’s town hall meeting at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, August 29) in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall at the Ocean City Free Public Library. I will provide updates on a number of important city improvement projects on tap. We’ll also be available to answer any of your questions. Video of the meeting will be available for those who can’t make it.
I was honored this morning to dedicate a new plaque at the Music Pier recognizing the history of the boardwalk flag-raising ceremony.
The tradition started at the Music Pier on July 4, 1940. It took on new meaning in the World War II years that followed and continued until 1946. Inspired by a veteran asking if a flag could be flown at Gillian’s Island Water Park, my brother Jim Gillian revived the tradition after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It has been held daily every summer since then. The dedication was made today on what would have been Jim’s 70th birthday. The flag-raising takes place at 9 a.m. daily outside the Music Pier from Memorial Day Weekend through Sept. 11. It has become one of the most beloved traditions in Ocean City.
The beach replenishment project is approaching its final stages and should be complete in early September. Please be aware that the contractor will begin demobilization of pipes and equipment on Monday and Tuesday. Beach access at Morningside Road will be closed. Please use caution in this area as trucks leave the island. Daily updates are alwaysavailable on the city website, and you can sign up to get them by email.
I’m sad to report on the loss of retired city team member Florence D’Avocato. Flo worked for many departments, and she was beloved at her most recent post at the Ocean City Municipal Airport, where she worked until age 85. She was always dedicated first to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Please join Michele and me in extending deepest condolences to all of her family, friends and colleagues.
The Friends of the Ocean City Pops will sponsor a special concert featuring the music of Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Elvis Presley and Bobby Darin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday (August 30) at the Ocean City Music Pier. Tickets are available at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice.
The Ocean City Theatre Company’s Junior Company, featuring talented students in grades 5 to 8, will perform “High School Musical Jr.” this weekend. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday (August 28 and 29) at the Ocean City Music Pier, and tickets are available at oceancitytheatrecompany.com.
I hope to see you all tomorrow morning, and I hope you have a great weekend with family and friends.
Warm regards,
Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
