Free Beach Tags for Active Military Members and Veterans

Free 2016 beach tags for veterans and active members of the military will be available seven days a week at the Welcome Centers at City Hall (Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue), on the Route 52 Causeway, at 46th Street and West Avenue (weekends), on the Ocean City Music Pier (weekends) and at the 12th Street and Boardwalk booth (weekends). New state laws allow Ocean City to offer the free tags to veterans (the veteran only) and to active military members (including spouse and dependent children over the age of 12).  Proper military or veteran ID must be presented to receive a tag.

One of the following documents will be required to receive a free beach tag:
  • DD214 or any other discharge papers
  • County Veteran ID Card
  • Department of Veterans Affairs ID Card
  • Valid driver’s License if you received a veterans tag last year.
  • Government-issued active military ID
City Council is considering an ordinance that would allow veterans and military members to show ID on the beach to receive their free tags.

Why Beach Tags?
Beach tags are required in most municipalities along the New Jersey coastline.  They are a user fee to help offset the local municipalities cost of maintaining their beaches and providing lifeguards and other services such as trash removal, beach cleaning and the purchase of needed equipment and police protection. The cost of these items and all of the other beach benefits are supported by this user fee known as the beach tag.  The beach fee program was approved by the residents of Ocean City in 1976 and continued since that time to help offset all the costs associated with the beach.
