  Hurricane Sandy: Ocean City (10/28/2012)

Doug Bergen:
OK, we're live with nine minutes to go before the mandatory evacuation deadline in Ocean City. We're inviting anybody to share questions, observations, information, photos, whatever.

There wasn't much sand on the north end to begin with. But the geotubes from the dune restoration project at Waverly are already exposed.

Doug Bergen:
About 2 p.m. there were some really freaky sirens that went off — I guess as a warning for folks to evacuate — then a mandatory evacuation announcement came over the loudspeakers on Asbury Avenue downtown.

Doug Bergen:
Couple things I can answer: I'm near the bridge, so I can take a look in a minute. The Super Fresh parking lot is jammed with cars, but looks like a nice coveted spot of high ground. Ocean City schools have definitely announced Monday and Tuesday with kids returning Wednesday (but I suppose that could change based on what happens).

The 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center says Sandy is 270 miles east of Cape Hatteras, and hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles away from her center. Guess that means the real wind isn't too far away.

Sunday October 28, 2012 4:51 Doug Bergen
4:54
Doug Bergen:
So Sandy won't be a hurricane when she arrives, but she'll perhaps gather strength? This from the last NWS report: SANDY IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION INTO A FRONTAL OR WINTERTIME LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM PRIOR TO LANDFALL. HOWEVER...THIS TRANSITION WILL NOT BE ACCOMPANIED BY A WEAKENING OF THE SYSTEM...AND IN FACT A LITTLE STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE DURING THIS PROCESS.

despite the sentinel's comments about a "2 year storm occurring every once every two years" and etc. that is wrong. it is a recurrance interval. for example: a 10 year storm has a probability of 1/10 or 10% chance of happening in a given year. A 100 year storm has a probability of 1/100 or 1% chance of happening in a given year.

Dough- I have to say what you're doing here is great. It definitely is showing the recent transplants of the last 15 years or so and the summer residents what the natives see in the off season. It's been a pretty dry patch for the last ten years or so. It's interesting to note: that in '62, they didn't have bulkheads along the beach front and up into the 80s there were no dunes along the boardwalk and water regularly washed underneath it. There has been a lot of beach building through the 90s and 2000s.

A few things about eventual landfall of Sandy: NJ shore landfall is likely...as far north as Asbury Park, as far south as Atlantic City.

Sunday October 28, 2012 8:49 DanSkeldonNBC40
8:49
But do not focus on the landfall point: Many believe that if center of storm landfalls in their town/county, they are in for worst weather.

If what Dan Skeldon says is true that's good for OC. Better to be south of the point of landfall than north due to the counter rotation. Worst storm surge is to the north

NBC40's Dan Skeldon just posted this:

A few points about the landfall point of Hurricane Sandy:
1.) I still think, as most forecasters do, that this storm will make landfall somewhere along the Jersey shore. It could be as far north as Asbury Park, it could be as far south as Atlantic City. I think that regardless of where the landfall point is within that range, it will not change the forecasted impact of Sandy on South Jersey.

2.) Remember that just because the landfall is in your town, or the center of the storm goes right over your town/county, that does NOT mean that you are going to be ground zero for the worst damage from this storm. This storm is so big, and stretches for hundreds of hundreds of miles, that so many different regions will get the worst of so many different impacts. For example:
WORST SNOW: West Virginia, where blizzard warnings are up

Update on 10/11 th block of Simpson. Water has gotten pretty deep - I am not good at estimating depth but I would take a guess and say it is over a foot deep and flowing like a river. Alley between Simpson and Bay is also flooded with about a foot of water also and we are all getting water in our garages. Neighbor just told us that the tide in the morning will likely be the highest and then tides will begin to reduce - any one know if that is accurate?

Couple quick observations: We still have power (at least at 8th and Bay). The wind is pretty light right now. The rain isn't terribly heavy, but the water in the immediate neighborhood is pretty high. The crest at the center of Bay Avenue is probably passable, but the rest of it is pretty much underwater and we've got a little more than an hour and a half before the morning high tide.

Just going back and reading tweets from Dan Skeldon. Looks as if this storm isn't getting any weaker, though we must be in a bit of a lull right now in terms of wind and heavy rain.

Still an hour from high tide...and Atlantic City tidal gauge already at 7.7 feet and climbing. Moderate flooding now, major expected.

Doug Bergen:
5 a.m. National Weather Service forecast: Storm still 385 miles from New York City. Winds have increased to 85 mph. Hurricane-force winds expected from Chincoteague (Va.) to Chatham (Mass.). Storm surge could make all tides 4 to 8 feet higher than normal. 4 to 8 inches of rain. And god knows if there will be any beach left.

This just in from the U.S. Coast Guard: The Coast Guard has received word that the crew of the HMS Bounty has abandoned ship approximately 90 miles southeast of Hatteras N.C., Monday.

The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and lifejackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies.

The Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation and assess the weather conditions to determine the soonest Coast Guard aircraft or surface assets can be on scene to conduct effective rescue operations.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina initially received a call from the owner of the 180-foot, three mast tall ship, HMS Bounty, saying she had lost communication with the vessel's crew late Sunday evening.

The Coast Guard 5th District command center in Portsmouth subsequently received a signal from the emergency position indicating radio beacon registered to the Bounty, confirming the distress and position.

An air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched aboard an HC-130 Hercules aircraft, which later arrived on scene and reestablished communications with the Bounty's crew.

The vessel was reportedly taking on water and was without propulsion. On scene weather is reported to be 40 mph winds and 18-foot seas.

Low tide is around 2 or 3, and the big question is indeed: Will anybody be able to travel out? It's definitely not receding too quickly two hours after high tide, but it does look as if the winds are now out of the west — which theoretically will help.

This from Dan Skeldon 8 minutes ago: The worst is yet to come.
WILL THE NEXT HIGH TIDE BE AS BAD OR WORSE THAN THIS MORNING'S?????

If the latest forecast issued by the National Weather Service is correct, yes it will be. This forecast will depend not on the track of Sandy...that is pretty much set. The speed at which Sandy makes landfall may alter these projections. A faster landfall, one before high tide, may help lower levels a bit. A slower landfall would raise them. Just for reference, tidal gauges at Atlantic City got to around 8.2 FEET this morning, and Cape May got to at least 8.8 FEET. So again, IF this forecast holds, this evening's high tide would be a foot to a foot and a half ABOVE what you saw this morning!!!!

* AT ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY (OCEANFRONT), THIS EVENING'S HIGH TIDE OCCURS AT 800 PM WITH A FORECAST TIDE LEVEL AROUND 9.5 FEET ABOVE MEAN LOWER LOW WATER.

* AT CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY (OCEANFRONT), THIS EVENING'S HIGH TIDE OCCURS AT 834 PM WITH A FORECAST TIDE LEVEL OF 9.5 TO 10.0 FEETABOVE MEAN LOWER LOW WATER.

I can only say that the Ninth Street causeway (Route 52) is not passable because Ninth and Bay is still underwater. It's going down pretty quickly, though, with low tide around 2 or 3. Wesley Ave. and the O.C.-Longport Bridge might be better, but who knows what the causeway looks like on the other side. The city did announce that access on and off the island was banned until the water recedes.

Channel 6 recently changed the projected landfall path to just South of Cape May right up the Delaware Bay. With that new path they are projecting storm surge North of center of roughly 6' to 10'. Will that surge increase the bay levels? What time is next high tide?

Storm surge now at the Cape May gauge: 5 feet. In Atlantic City...over 4 feet. Low tide has passed...tides now rising again!

Storm "surge" is how much extra water is in the back bays due to Sandy. As a 4-5 foot normal high tide returns...major tidal flooding again.

Biggest question all along for Sandy's impact here was landfall timing for this evening's high tide: Will faster landfall help at all?

Dan, thanks for all your updates on here and on Channel 40. Really appreciate your matter of fact reporting without employing the "scare tactics" that seem to be happening on the National broadcast stations. Foe example, one just reported as a "lead in" that Atlantic City was completely under water which conjures up all kinds of images of hotels, homes etc being completely submerged. Then when they did the actual reports they showed streets with about 4 feet of water - bad flooding - yes, but not to the degree that was being hyped.

Power out throughout island, so live reports will be tough. Posting from iPhone. Water has receded a good bit but Bay Avenue is still a river. Wind starting to pick up.

Unfortunately, the answer probably not. The surge of 4-5 feet will remain in the bays next few hours...water rises as normal tide arrives.

Early landfall/relaxing of winds may prevent surge from building higher than it already is leading up to high tide, but damage already done.
